In 2026, the scientific community marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yuriy Mykolaiovych Shevchenko (8 July 1926 – 7 March 2016), an outstanding mechanician and founder of the Ukrainian scientific school of thermoviscoplasticity.
Issue No. 7 of the Visnyk of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine contains an article by Yaroslav O. Zhuk, Vitalii G. Savchenko, and Maja O. Babeshko entitled “The Founder of the Theory of Thermoviscoplasticity as a Branch of the Mechanics of Deformable Solids. To the 100th Anniversary of the Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yu.M. Shevchenko.”
Yuriy M. Shevchenko devoted more than half a century of his scientific career to the Institute of Mechanics. In 1972, he became Head of the newly established Department of Thermoplasticity and remained its leader until March 2016. His research and that of his scientific school advanced the theory of non-isothermal elastoplastic and thermoviscoplastic processes, methods for solving the corresponding boundary-value problems, and experimental approaches to constitutive modelling under complex loading.
Academician Shevchenko’s scientific results were published in 15 monographs and more than 260 papers. He supervised 10 doctoral and 29 candidate dissertations. His scientific school continues to develop research in thermomechanics and the mechanics of inelastic deformation of materials and structures.
The article in the Visnyk reviews Yuriy Shevchenko’s life and scientific career, the development of the research direction he founded, the evolution of the theory of thermoviscoplasticity, and his contribution to modern mechanics of deformable solids.
