S.P.Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics

of National Academy of Science of Ukraine

Basic achievements

S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was the first scientific establishment in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Institute of Technical Mechanics was established as well (Protocol N2 of General Meeting of UAS of 30.11.1918), S. P. Timoshenko's appointment as its director was confirmed. The scientist in mechanics known all over the world S, P.Timoshenko was one of the founders and a Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Academies in a number of countries, honorary doctor of a lot of universities and higher technical scientific institutions.

Scientific activity of the S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was generally recognized all over th e world. Thus, a number of monographs by the Institute scientists were translated into foreign languages and some editions were prepared and published in the co-authorship with foreign scientists. Applied Mechanics Reviews, the American journal of authority in the scientific world has dedicated its special issues to scientific investigations of the Institute researchers.

Scientific investigations in nonclassical problems of fracture mechanics, made under the supervision of A. N. Guz', Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Professor A. A. Kaminsky, were recognized both at home and abroad (Fracture Mechanics/ Ed. G. C. Sih, D. Francois. - Oxford - New York - Paris -Frankfurt - Sidney - Toronto: Pergamon Press, 1983.-179 p.)

The functions of the establishment-coordinator of the international series of scientific monographs Stability: Theory, Methods, Applications were entrusted to the Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Technological Institute in Florida (USA); A. A. Martynyuk, the Corr. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, is the editor from the Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

A. N. Guz', Director of the Institute, Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was selected Member of the European Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation.

Besides, 16 scientists of the Institute are the Members of the New York Academy of Sciences, and some scientists were selected. Foreign members of the Editorial Boards of scientific journals in Bulgaria, India, Canada, China, Latvia, USA, Yugoslavia. Every year most scientists of the Institute are invited with reports and lectures to International conferences, symposia - colloquiuma and schools.

Beginning from 1955 journal Prikladnaya Mekhanika (Applied Mechanics) was published at the Institute. The journal has now the status of the International scientific journal and is translated into English in the USA under the title of International Applied Mechanics.

The results of scientific researches of the S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have been recognized and highly appreciated. Most scientists of the Institute were honoured with the title of laureates of the State Prizes in Science and Engineering, nominal prizes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, etc.

The training of scientific personnel of higher qualification is one of the basic trends in the Institute activities. Only for the last 20 years (1978-1998) the Institute scientists have prepared 73 Doctors and 342 Candidates of Science (including 24 Doctors and 93 Candidates of Science for other academic institutions and for other countries). The works for the doctor's degree and post-graduate works are carried out at the Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in specialities: 01.02.01. - theoretical mechanics; 01.02.04. - mechanics of deformed rigid body; 01.02.05. - mechanics of liquid, gas and plasm; 01.02.06. - dynamics, strength of machines, instruments and apparatuses, 05.23.17. - structural mechanics.

Specialized council on the defence of theses for the doctors degree (physics and mathematics) in specialities 01.02.01. - theoretical mechanics; 01.02.04. - mechanics of deformed rigid body; for the doctor's degree in engineering in specialities: 01.02.04. - mechanics of deformed rigid body; 05.23.17. - structural mechanics.

The S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine maintains many-sided relations with higher educational institutions of Ukraine the leading scientists of the Institute successively combine their research work with pedagogical activities: they read the basic and special courses of lectures at Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University, National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI”, Kiev Technical University of Building and Architecture and other higher educational institutions of Kiev.
