History of Institute

The S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was celebrate its 80th jubilee at the end of 1998. It was in the period of November 1918 - January 1919, that the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UAS) carried out the active scientific-organizational work. It was then that the academic chairs of the Department of Physics and Mathematics were established. They included a Chair of Applied Mechanics headed by S.P.Timoshenko. The Institute of Technical Mechanics was established as well, S.P.Timoshenko's appointment as its director was confirmed. The scientist in mechanics known all over the world S, P.Timoshenko was one of the founders and a Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Academies in a number of countries, honorary doctor of a lot of universities and higher technical scientific institutions .

By the decision N 174 of 09.06.1993 of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine the Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was renamed after S.P.Timoshenko.

The Institute was headed by the well-known Members of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: S.P.Timoshenko (1918-1920), D.A.Grave (1921), K.K.Siminsky (1921-1932), S.V.Serensen (1932-1940), N.V.Kornoukhov (1940-1944), F.P.Belyankin (1944-1958), G.N.Savin (1858-1959), A.D.Kovalenko (1959-1965), V.O.Kononenko (1965-1975). Beginning from 1976 the S.P.Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine had been headed by A.N.Guz', Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Such well-known scientists, Academicians of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR as N.N.Bogolyubov, R.F.Ganiev, A.N.Dinnik, N.M.Krylov, Yu.A.Mitropolsky; K.K.Khrenov, Corr. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukr.SSR; Members of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukr.SSR V.T.Grinchenko, N.N.Davidenkov, G.V.Karpenko, N.A.Kilchevsky, E.O.Paton, G.S.Pisarenko, G.I.Sukhomel; Corr. Members of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukr.SSR B.N.Gorbunov, V.D.Grozin, A.G.Ivakhnenko, S.N.Kozhevnikov, V.M.Maizel, A.N.Penkov, A.F.Ulitko, I.Ya.Shtaerman worked at the Institute in different times.

July 1, 2006, the Institute collective consisted of 62 Doctors and 90 candidates of Sciences; including 4 members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Ya.M.Grigorenko, A.N.Guz', V.D.Kubenko, Yu.N.Shevchenko), 4 Corr.-Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (A.A.Martynyuk, N.A.Shul'ga, L.P.Khoroshun, I.S.Chernyshenko).
